EVA LANGARICA: UN ESPACIO DONDE APRENDEMOS ENTRE MAMÁS E HIJOS (A SPACE WHERE MOTHERS AND CHILDREN CAN LEARN TOGETHER)

El trabajo de muchas de nosotras, integrantes del Colectivo, está influido por nuestras ocupaciones como madres, y a la vez, muchas veces lo que hacemos en el trabajo en el colectivo influye en la vida de nuestros hijos.   

Incluso varias de nosotras recordamos las fechas en las que nos integramos porque lo relacionamos con las edades de nuestros hijos en aquella época. Por ejemplo, cuando yo me enteré de la existencia del Colectivo y de la problemática de la fábrica de Metales y Derivados, fue porque me contó una compañera que tenía una hija en el salón de mi hija, estaban en tercero de primaria. Ahorita mis hijas ya son profesionales, una es licenciada en enfermería y la otra es ingeniera, y tengo un sobrino que está por titularse de la carrera de ingeniería ambiental.

Varias de las integrantes del Colectivo empezamos a participar con un poco de resistencia, por la falta de tiempo, sobre todo por el cuidado de los hijos o nietos, pero curiosamente ya estando involucradas pronto nos dimos cuenta de las ventajas para nuestro entorno que nos da el trabajo que hacemos entre todas, y que más bien nuestros niños se ven beneficiados.

Nos ayuda que podemos empezar a involucrarnos al ritmo que nos permita nuestro propio tiempo, yo empecé como voluntaria nada más; cada mes iba a las reuniones pero después de un tiempo ya empecé a tomar los talleres y así fui invitando a otras que llegaron después de mí.

Otra cosa que también ayuda es que los niños y jóvenes aquí tienen su propio espacio; cuando vienen ya saben que solitos pueden llegar al cuarto que está para ellos y ahí se entretienen. Y lo bueno de que se vayan involucrando ellos también es que entre ellos van informando a los demás niños y jóvenes de la comunidad, a veces les preguntan qué hace su mamá aquí y ellos les platican. También el tema del medio ambiente lo han ido integrando a sus clases, en sus tareas, y sus maestros les han empezado a dejar trabajos sobre los mismos temas, y antes no era así.

Es una muy buena forma para que la información y el interés por asuntos del ambiente se extiendan por toda la comunidad, y así entre todos nos cuidemos, porque solo sabiendo con claridad lo que pasa donde habitamos podemos cuidarnos.

A SPACE WHERE MOTHERS AND CHILDREN CAN LEARN TOGETHER

The work of many of us, the women of the Collective, is influenced by our role as mothers and, at the same time, much of the work we do in the Collective influences the lives of our children.  

In fact, many of us remember when we joined because we connect it to how old our children were at the time. For example, when I found out about the existence of the Collective and the issues at the Metales y Derivados plant, my daughter was in the third grade. It was the mother of one of her classmates who told me. My daughters have since graduated from college, one with a nursing degree and the other as an engineer, and I have a nephew who is about to graduate with a degree in environmental engineering.

Many of us at the Collective were hesitant to get too involved at first due to lack of time, particularly because we had to care for our children or grandchildren. However, once we got involved, we quickly realized that we could improve our environment through working together, and that this would benefit our children in the end.

It helps that we can start getting involved at our own pace as time allows. I initially got involved only as a volunteer, attending the monthly meetings, but after a while I started taking some of the workshops and started inviting some of the women who came after me.

Something else that also helps is that children and teens have their own space. Whenever they come, they know they can find their way to the room set aside for them where they can do their own activities. Having them get involved also helps because they can then start raising awareness with other kids in the community. Sometimes these kids ask them what their mom does here, and they tell them about it. They have also started bringing environmental issues into their classrooms, their homework assignments, and their teachers have begun giving them projects on the same topics. I didn’t use to be that way.

It is a great way for information about and interest in the environment to spread throughout the community, so we can all protect ourselves, because we can only protect ourselves to the extent that we are aware of what is going on where we live.
